TEMBA Mliswa wants his daughter Mudiwa to be an advocate against drugs and substance abuse after she was acquitted in a case in which she was being accused of having been found in possession of drugs at a house in Harare.
The politician said he also wants tougher laws that will punish those who are supplying drugs across the country.
The State was alleging that on February 22, Mliswa and Chigudu were in possession of drugs at a house in Avonlea.
Mudiwa Mliswa and her accomplice Tawanda Chigudu of Avonlea Harare, were acquitted after a full trial.
Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo yesterday acquitted the two after a full trial. Magistrate Moyo said the State failed to prove both its case as there were other adults in the house who could have been the owners of the drugs as they were not found on their person.
She added that Mudiwa was a visitor at the house and as she had no control of what was in the house.
She said the State witnesses failed to corroborate their evidence which created doubt in the eyes of the court as to what happened on the day in question.
Speaking outside court after the verdict was passed, Mliswa told H-Metro:
“What is important is that I hope Musiwa learns that you have got to associate with the right people and you have got to do the right things and I hope this is a lesson to her.
“I have no doubt that she will certainly reflect, introspect and choose a better path for herself.
“As children, they must know that you are worrying the parent, there is no parent who wants to go through this and I hope that you realise that mutoriro, guka is not for you.
“Drugs and substance abuse is not right and you have to hang around with the right people.
“I think our laws are still weak, we need to come up with real punitive laws, we must not only look at those who indulge but also those who supply.”
He said Mudiwa should preach about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.
The State was alleging that on February 22, Mliswa and Chigudu were found in possession of drugs at a house in Avonlea.
Acting on a tip-off, the detectives conducted a search at the house wherein a sachet with a white substance was recovered from underneath a sofa.
A preliminary field test was conducted and the substance tested positive for crystal meth and weighed 1.3 grammes. (H Metro)
