Amid the huge City scandal where they have been found guilty of 114 charges relating to financial breaches, Oasis will remain City’s MOST loyal fans – even if they end up getting relegated into the EFL.
From kit designs to matchday access, from unofficial anthems to sticking up for them on social media, Noel and Liam Gallagher have proved themselves to be Cityzens if nothing else.
Nearly 30 years ago, City were on the cusp of relegation to the Second Division.
And while no fan wants to see their club go down, Noel saw a silver lining.
Speaking to a reporter, he said: “I’m hoping they’ll get relegated to the third division so I can buy the club for about a million quid or something like that.” And when the topic of buying shares came up, he said: “I’m not sure.
“It is the easiest way to waste a lot of money to put it into a football club, especially Manchester City.” The 56-year-old even revealed to The Guardian in 2000 that his “dad chose City instead, just to p*** them [his dad’s brothers] off. No other reason than that.”
But City’s luck changed over the decades.
Ahead of the 2024/25 season, Noel co-designed a stunning new fourth kit with Puma to mark the 30th anniversary of Oasis’s debut album Definitely Maybe. On launch day, it became the fastest-selling and most-sold kit on launch day in City’s 131-year history. And the fact that it aligned with a magical reunion was something else.
These kit projects took up the best part of two years, and in 2022, the brothers were not even speaking, let alone plotting a reunion.
Speaking to The Athletic, Serena Gosling, director of retail and licensing at the City Football Group, revealed that “the stars were aligned” for the launch. She added that the whole reunion was a “huge secret” as the club confessed to having been left in the dark.
With supersonic wave patterns and the same yellow from the original album, the likes of Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish showed off the strip in several of their European fixtures.
Even the following season, Noel’s handwriting was used for the player names and numbers on City’s cup kits.
So it is fair to say that the Etihad is riddled with Oasis fever, and the Gallaghers can often be spotted in the dressing room after major wins.
After the 2019 Premier League title win, Noel was in the thick of the dressing room party as he congratulated each player individually before the stars broke into Wonderwall. – Sun.
