THE Commonwealth Monitoring Force contingent was very excited. After all, they had been stuck in one of the most desolate parts of Rhodesia at assembly point Foxtrot in the Sabi Tribal Trust Lands for weeks.
And then came the announcement that nurses were arriving to assist a Royal Navy doctor who is looking after the health of the ZANLA elements who have arrived at the assembly points.
The men got out their razors, they shaved, pressed their uniforms and stood by, waiting for the competition which would arise on the arrival of nurses.
They duly came and there was only one small surprise. They were all men from the Royal Navy.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
It is always good to lower your expectation to avoid disappointment. The soldiers in the story raised their expectations, because they hoped to receive female nurses, but were disappointed when this did not happen.
It is important to look good always. When we look good, we feel good about ourselves. The better we look, the happier we are. And the happier we are, the more confident we feel.
In life, we tend to set our minds on certain characteristics in the hope of achieving certain objectives and when we do not achieve what we set out to do, we see ourselves as failures. But in some instances all would not have been entirely lost.
The soldiers in the story cleaned up in the hope of impressing female nurses which did not happen but, the silver lining was that they improved their personal hygiene, which was good for their health.
