Thief nabbed stripping plates off stolen car

A DARING Sakubva man over the weekend stole a parked motor vehicle in Mutare’s Central Business District (CBD), and was later apprehended while removing its registration plates.
The suspect, Lancelot Munhandi (30), of 33 OTS, Sakubva, allegedly stole a Toyota Altezza that had been parked by Bothwell Gomba at his workplace (LAMTRAMS Motors).
Gomba had left the keys in the ignition.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the theft, adding that Munhandi is now in police custody assisting with investigations.
“On July 3, 2026 at around 8am, Gomba parked his vehicle, a silver Toyota Altezza, registration number ADQ 7459, at his workplace and left the keys on the ignition while he commenced duty. On the same date at around 3:30 pm the complainant discovered that his vehicle was missing and alerted his colleagues who instituted a search for the vehicle while he proceeded to ZRP Mutare Central to make a report.
“The complainant’s workmates, Trevor Nyarai and Doyen Mudaviro, decided to drive in search of the vehicle and while driving along the Harare-Mutare Road they saw the vehicle parked near Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital with the accused person standing at the back trying to remove its rear number plates.
“Nyarai and Mudaviro stopped their vehicle, apprehended the accused person and recovered the stolen vehicle keys from him. Gomba was advised and went to the scene and recovered his motor vehicle. The accused person was arrested. The value of the stolen car is US$2 500 and all was recovered. Investigations are in progress,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
