Thieves abandon explosive device

POLICE in Bindura are investigating a case in which a suspected explosive device was found inserted in a wall separating ZBC Mashonaland Central Province offices and a grocery shop last week. Acting Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati confirmed the incident and said no arrests had been made.

He said investigations were in progress. Asst Insp Masikati said they suspected that the suspects wanted to gain entry into the grocery shop by blowing up the wall, but decided against it for fear that explosion would attract attention.

“We are investigating a case in which some assailants placed an explosive device on the walls that separates a grocery store and ZBC Mashonaland Central Province offices. We suspect the thieves wanted to blow the walls to gain entrance and steal from the grocery shop,” he said.

“It could be just mere coincidence that the shop is near ZBC because the suspects later broke into the grocery shop through the door using an unknown object and stole groceries worth $395. So far no arrests have been made.”

He said the device was discovered by the shopkeeper.

“The shopkeeper went to the store and discovered groceries strewn all over the front door of the shop and on entering the shop she discovered that groceries worth $395 were missing,” he said.

Asst Insp Masikati said she also discovered that the door to the toilet was opened and on further inquiry she discovered that there was an object which she suspected to be an explosive which was placed on the walls that separate the grocery shop and the ZBC                                                                      offices.

She reported the matter to the police. He appealed for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
