Two suspected thieves who stole from a police station the vehicle they had earlier abandoned at a crime scene, appeared in court yesterday facing a charge of theft of a motor vehicle.

Police impounded the vehicle after they found it at the crime scene.

Fungai Yakobo (23) and Tinevimbo Shumba (18) appeared before magistrate Stanford Mambanje who remanded them in custody because the particular charge means they must apply for bail at the High Court.

It is the state’s case that on April 6 at around 2am and along Sipolilo Battle Street in Milton Park, Harare, the two and their accomplices still at large were intercepted by police in the process of stealing tobacco bales from a truck going to the auction floors.

The gang escaped but abandoned their Honda Fit registration number AEO9981, which the police seized and took to Milton Park Station as an exhibit.

But on April 13, at around 2.35am, the two went to ZRP Milton Park and accessed the car before driving away.

On Sunday, police received information on the whereabouts of the motor vehicle which was in the possession of Yakobo, Shumba and an accomplice still at large.

Yakobo and Shumba were arrested, but their accomplice managed to escape with the motor vehicle.
