The two-day annual Schools Arts Festival which began yesterday at the Harare Exhibition Park was a hive of activity where more than 30 schools and 12 local musicians were billed to perform.

The festival dubbed “Let Them” saw artistes like Albert Nyathi, Baba Shupi and others taking centre stage while schools from the country’s 10 provinces were battling it out in seven categories that include theatre, poetry, craft, dance, fashion, art and music at the fun park area.

Chiedza Child Care Centre (Waterfalls, Harare) and Njube High School the first and second edition winners will be hoping to cause more upsets by defending their titles at this year’s edition.

In an interview with Cool Lifestyle, festival director Chido Musasiwa said this year’s edition was better and bigger.

“We have worked on improving our game each year and this year’s edition is bigger and better. More than 30 schools (both private and Government) will be participating in various art disciplines that is theatre, dance, music, fashion, art and craft.

“Artistes performing this year are Transit Crew, Kessiah, Richie Orange, Buhle and Doc Vikela and various poets from around Zimbabwe,” she said.

Winners and outstanding performers will walk away with a trophy, shields and certificates.

“We are only going to have judges for the art category only because this is where we really need to support our children and besides our festival themes are centred on being a creative artist. For the music and dance category we will appreciate the outstanding performers in a different way,“ she said.

“Let Them” is a child oriented creative educational and cultural entertainment initiative that aims to create a platform for young people to unleash their artistic talent and also to engage them in discussions which centre on issues affecting them, like HIV and AIDS, social stigmas and classes, children’s rights and preservation of cultural heritage.

Tickets are going for $2.
