Chimurenga music legend Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited have expressed their deepest condolences following the death of businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and three other people in a helicopter crash on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by Mapfumo, the veteran musician extended condolences to the Chivayo family, as well as the families of Senelisiwe Magagula, Kelvin Soda and Courage Mutavirwo.
“May God give the Chivayo family strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time. May the souls of Wicknell, Lucy, and all those who perished rest in eternal peace,” Mapfumo said.

The tragedy has also disrupted Mapfumo’s Zimbabwe engagements.
Mapfumo had returned to Harare from his United States base on September 29 to perform at Jah Prayzah’s wedding, which had been scheduled for October 3, as well as Chivayo’s birthday celebrations.
Following Chivayo’s death, Jah Prayzah postponed the wedding indefinitely. Mapfumo, who has confirmed that he was paid for the engagements, said he remains committed to honouring his contractual obligation and perform at the wedding once when a new date is confirmed.
