Thousands of people today thronged Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo to join the rest of the country in celebrating the 42nd independence anniversary amid pomp and fan fare.

People from all walks of life and age groups besieged Mucheke the site of provincial celebrations to witness the festivities that resumed this year after a two-year hiatus because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Proceedings to mark the historic day started in the morning with detachments from ZNA 4 Brigade, ZRP and Prisons and Correctional Services marching from Chikato Police station to the stadium.

At the stadium, the security services constituted a parade and thereafter service chiefs and senior Government officials arrived preceding the arrival of Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira.

Minister Chadzamira inspected the parade before reading the Presidential Speech.

The crowd was then entertained by performances from traditional dance troupes, ZCC Mutendi Band and Prison Service band.

Popular Masvingo musician Baba Rah also entertained the crowd with a polished performance.

In the afternoon festivities continued with a soccer match pitting Masvingo United and Simba Bhora.
