ZIMBABWEANS are expected to gather in large numbers at Rufaro Stadium in Harare on Saturday for the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day commemorations.
The event is set to symbolise the nation’s resilience and a victory over illegal Western sanctions that have impacted the country for years.
The call for a strong turnout was made by Citizens Against Economic Sanctions director Mr Martin Zharare.
He described the commemorations as a landmark moment in Zimbabwe’s ongoing struggle against sanctions.
Speaking on the sidelines of the recently concluded Zanu PF 22nd National People’s Conference in Mutare, Mr Zharare expressed confidence in the preparations for the event.
“October 25 is SADC Anti-Sanctions Day and we are calling upon Zimbabweans to turn out in large numbers for the commemorations at Rufaro Stadium,” he said.
Mr Zharare said the day showcases Zimbabwe’s resilience and triumph over sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies.
He noted that the event holds significant importance for the nation.
“His Excellency is expected to deliver a message to the people and the world that Zimbabwe has won the sanctions war against the Americans.
“Now, they want to remove the sanctions, but with conditions. We are saying sanctions must be lifted unconditionally,” Mr Zharare said.
He reaffirmed commitment to the Land Reform Programme, which is irreversible and is fully aligned with the national Constitution.
“The people of Zimbabwe agreed to compensate farmers for developments made on the farms, but not for the land itself.
“Our land is not for sale. Sanctions must go”.
Mr Zharare also highlighted the severe economic consequences Zimbabwe has endured due to these sanctions, calling for reparations for the losses incurred.
He said the economic toll has been staggering.
“The Americans sanctioned our country, and we have lost up to US$100 billion since 2000. That money must be repaid through reparations. We also demand reparations for losses dating back to 1890,” Mr Zharare said.
In his remarks at a post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said preparations for the day were underway, with a series of activities planned across the country and beyond.
“The objectives of the Anti-Sanctions Day are to call for the unconditional removal of all the unjustified and illegal sanctions; to raise awareness of the negative impact of the illegal sanctions and celebrate the resilience of the people of Zimbabwe under the visionary leadership of His Excellency the President, Cde Dr ED Mnangagwa; and to reaffirm Zimbabwe’s appreciation for regional and international solidarity in the fight against unilateral coercive measures imposed on the country,” said Dr Muswere.
President Mnangagwa is expected to deliver a national address highlighting Government’s people-centred policies and the strides made in transforming the economy despite external pressures.
His message will also be shared by Zimbabwean embassies abroad, which will engage host governments and international partners in solidarity efforts.
The SADC Secretariat will also issue a regional statement in support of Zimbabwe, while the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services will host an Anti-Sanctions solidarity event and gala at the Heritage Village featuring top local artistes.
In addition, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development is expected to release a documentary showcasing the achievements of Zimbabwe’s SMEs sector, a key pillar of inclusive economic growth.
The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, through the University of Zimbabwe, will also host a public lecture and student-led panel discussions to promote dialogue and awareness among the youth.
The people of Zimbabwe are resolute in their demand for unconditional freedom from sanctions and a commitment to their nation’s development and sovereignty.
