A devastating incident has shocked villagers in Vengai Village, Mberengwa District, where twin sisters aged five and a six-year-old boy allegedly drowned while swimming in a fish pond at the boy’s homestead over the weekend.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths.

Mberengwa District Development Co-ordinator, Mr Vafios Hlabati, confirmed the incident in an interview this morning.

“Yes it is true that three grade one learners at Musume Primary School in Mberengwa drowned in a fish pond over the weekend,” he said.

Mr Hlabati said the deceased have been identified as Tariroyashe and Nokutenda Maidza (both aged five) and Alroid Shumba, a boy aged six, all from Vengai Village, Ward 23, under Chief Mataga in Mberengwa District.

He said preliminary indications suggest the children may have drowned while swimming in the fish pond.

“They drowned in a fish pond at Mr Alroid Shumba’s (father of the deceased boy),” said Mr Hlabati.

He said the bodies of the victims have been recovered and investigations are ongoing.

Mr Hlabati urged parents and guardians to exercise caution and supervise their children, especially near water bodies.
