Three people from Marondera drowned in two separate incidents last week.
In the first incident, Simbarashe Nyahuye (33) and Enmark Jani (13) from Kanjiva village under Chief Svosve in Marondera, went fishing in Gabriel Dam, where they drowned.
The second incident occurred at Marirangwe Dam, Marondera, where Archbaud Amos Komara (32) of Yellowcity surbub drowned while swimming with his friend Simon Kache.
Giving details, Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi said: “Nyahuye and Jani, on the fateful day, proceeded to Gabriel Dam for fishing, but the two failed to return home on the same day which prompted other villagers to conduct a search for them, but to no avail.
“Reports are that their bodies were later found floating in the dam by Martin Nyakusa of the same village. A report was made at Igava police post and officers attended the scene and then retrieved the two bodies from the dam; these were immediately conveyed to Marondera Hospital mortuary for post mortem.”
In the second incident, Inspector Chazovachiyi said Komara’s body was also taken to Marondera hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
He urged the public to be cautious whenever they are fishing or swimming in water bodies.
“Komara from Yellowcity in Marondera drowned in Marirangwe Dam while swimming after he had been drinking alcohol with his friend Simon Kache,” he said. “The body of Komara was later retrieved from the dam and conveyed to Marondera Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
“We appeal to the public not to play in water bodies without life-saving jackets that can save them from drowning. We also urge the public not to attempt to save or retrieve bodies of the people who would have drowned for they may end up losing their lives. When fishing, we urge the public to do it outside the water bodies and use fishing rods.”
