YOUNG female boxing star, Monica Mkandla is continuing her impressive run in the ring across the Limpopo River after she registered her third career win on Sunday at “Pump up the Jam” tournament to keep a clean record.
The Gwanda-born Mkandla, who is now based in South Africa beat Sibongile Mabuya in a four-round junior bantamweight bout at The Box Camp Booysens Boxing Gym. The young boxer who goes by the moniker “Savage” won the match by unanimous decision (37-40, 39-37, 40-36) to get the perfect birthday present.
Her fight was one of the curtain raiser matches for the biggest fight on the day which was between Ludumo “9mm” Lamati and Ken Jordan which the former won via unanimous point decision.
Mkandla told Chronicle Sport that registering her third win in as many matches in her career makes her extremely proud and praised her coach and manager for all their work in ensuring that she becomes a champion that she is.
“I am very happy with myself, I want to also thank my coach for the hard work and my manager Colleen for believing in me all the way. She is a good person,” said Mkandla.
“Not to forget my mum and dad for their prayers. They keep me going and they support me in my sport as they see me as a champion.”
Mkandla, who only turned professional early August after her win at the Charles Manyuchi Academy boxing tournament, landed more punches with weight than her opponent on the day.
In her second professional fight, Mkandla beat South Africa’s Nomusa Ngema by unanimous decision in their international bantamweight fight at the ESPN Africa Boxing 20 at The Galleria in Johannesburg. At the time, the win was the biggest of her career.
Mkandla’s next fight is scheduled for October 26 at the ESPN Africa Boxing tournament. She is yet to know her opponent. — Follow on Twitter @brandon_malvin
