A 27-YEAR-OLD Lupane man will spend a year behind bars after he viciously attacked two women during a botched robbery near St Luke’s Hospital.
The Lupane Magistrates Court convicted Amon Kundishora Chakanyuka of attempted robbery and assault, sentencing him to 12 months in prison with no option of a fine.
According to court records, on 5 September, Chakanyuka ambushed a woman, demanding her cellphone and cash.
“He punched her, grabbed her by the neck, and knocked her to the ground,” said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) in a statement.
The commotion drew the attention of a 43-year-old Good Samaritan, who rushed to help but was also attacked.
“The offender punched her on the left eye, leaving her unconscious,” the NPAZ said.
One of the victims managed to alert a hospital security guard, who quickly pounced on Chakanyuka and handed him over to the police.
The NPAZ condemned the attack, saying:
“Violence against women will not be tolerated and the justice system remains committed to safeguarding vulnerable community members.”
