Titans Tournament adds fresh spark to Bulawayo basketball

BULAWAYO Basketball Association (BBA) basketball is set to receive a welcome boost with the introduction of the inaugural Titans Basketball Tournament, which will bring together 12 teams for two days of action-packed competition this weekend.

Held in partnership with the BBA, the tournament will feature eight men’s teams and four women’s sides, providing players with an opportunity to compete, sharpen their skills and showcase their talent on Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament is the brainchild of Titans Basketball Club founder and president Tracey Norma Phiri, with organisers hoping it will become a permanent fixture on the local basketball calendar.

The men’s competition will feature hosts Titans alongside Gwanda Rebels, Scorpions, Schools of Mines, Nust, Riverdale Academy, Lakers and Mavericks.

In the women’s category, Titans will battle Nust, Lakers and Phoenix. The event comes at a time of growing interest in basketball in Bulawayo, and the coming together of clubs from different backgrounds is expected to deliver competitive contests while providing players with valuable match experience.

For Phiri, however, the tournament represents much more than winning and losing.

It is also an opportunity to promote discipline, sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles among young athletes.

The competition will run under the theme “Say No to Drugs!!!”, with the #CleanSport campaign forming a central part of the initiative.

“Titans Basketball Tournament unfolds in partnership with the Bulawayo Basketball Association, it stands as more than a competition, it is a celebration of disciplined excellence, athletic growth, and the kind of sportsmanship that leaves lasting value on and off the court,” said Phiri.

The clean sport message adds a strong community dimension to the tournament, with organisers encouraging young people to embrace sport as a positive outlet and make healthy lifestyle choices.

On the court, the tournament promises intense competition as teams test combinations and players compete for recognition.

With eight teams in the men’s category, coaches will have an ideal opportunity to assess their squads in a competitive tournament environment.

The tournament has also attracted support from DA Timbers, Sportszone, Cupidhouse and Evergold, whose backing has helped bring the event to life.

Their involvement is expected to play an important role as Titans seek to establish the competition and grow it in future editions.

Organisers believe a successful debut tournament could pave the way for an expanded event in the years ahead, featuring more teams and increased sponsorship support.

For now, the focus remains firmly on delivering a successful inaugural competition and providing players with a meaningful platform to compete.
