Industry and Marketing Board statistics show that deliveries at auction floors had dropped from peak sales of 8 000 bales to 500 bales per floor per day. This prompted the TIMB to declare an early closure for the auction floors. On the closing day the Tobacco Sales Floor received 1 635 bales, Boka Tobacco Floors 1084 and Premier Tobacco Floors 999 bales.
BTF had the highest average price of US$2,96 per kg, TSF US$2,91 and PTF US$2,67 per kg.
Some tobacco growers complained that they still had tobacco back home while others continued to deliver their crop on the closing day.
These will have to sell their tobacco during clean- up sales to be held on August 6.
A total of 159 million kg had been sold at the end of the auction selling season with 53 million kg having been sold at the three auction floors while 106 million kg were sold through the contract.
About 170 million kg was expected to be sold this season. – Business Reporter.
