Zimdancehall prodigy Tocky Vybz will tomorrow take his act to Pablo’z VIP Lounge, an upmarket joint for the “Cultural Evening” starting at 9pm.
This is his first show this year at the hangout that is associated with big spenders and a different crowd of the capital’s demographic.
Tomorrow’s gig is also meant to give Tocky a breakthrough into the northern suburbs where his fans will have a rare chance to see him up close and personal.
Born Obey Makamure, Tocky had a great show last October when he toured Canada, courtesy of Zimbabwean born DJ Slicey T who hosts the African Radio Show in Canada.
Tocky rose to fame with the release of his chart topper “Mhai” which appealed to both young and old.
More than anything else, it was his thought provoking and socially conscious lyrics that won him hearts of many, while his contemporaries were all about “beef”, Tocky chose a different route which in turn drew fans from different ages into his orbit.
“The song “Mhai” almost became an anthem although he had other hits such as “Tocky Ayenda neNyika” and “Ndini Ndinorira” which wowed many.
Although his critics slammed him for his lack of fashion sense, the musician has an I don’t care attitude which has been compared to that of Lady Gaga, famous controversial pop artist.
He was also credited for bridging the gap between the young and old with regards to Zimdancehall.
Currently he is tearing the dancefloors with his latest album “Toti-Toti” which isn’t wholly dancehall.
Songs such as “Masamaria namaJudah”, “Pamuromo” and “Anakirwa” are receiving generous airplay on the airwaves. And most of his fans are now welcoming his sound which has depth and more mature.
Elvis Bokosha, his manager said energy was within the camp and were raring to rock the masses.
“We are not going to restrict ourselves to new songs only but also perform a cool mix of new and old. “Excitement is high because this is our second show in Borrowdale after last year’s gig which was well attended. So energy is high and we are looking forward to a great show,” he said.
Lyndon Kapuya of Pablo’z VIP Lounge confirmed the gig saying the stage was set for a top drawer show. He urged fans to come early to enjoy the cool ambiance at the hangout.
