A toddler died in Nhemachena Village under Chief Chipuriro in Guruve after being fed porridge by the mother in a case of suspected food poisoning.

Makanakaishe Chidzambwa, aged 20 months, died on the way to Guruve Hospital.

Mashonaland Central Province acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Ndhliwayo confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were underway.

The incident happened on January 11 at around 11am when Racheal Denga (21), prepared porridge for her baby.

Asst Insp Ndhliwayo said the mother ate the porridge together with the baby and afterwards the baby started showing signs of dizziness and became unconscious.

Denga’s husband Alfred Nhemachema (26) rushed the baby to Guruve Hospital and she died on the way.

The matter was reported to Guruve police station and the body was taken to Guruve Hospital mortuary. Asst Insp Ndliwayo advised parents and guardians to keep food and cooking utensils at safe places and not expose them to poisonous environments.

“Pesticide must be kept at a safe place and used properly. We also urge parents and guardians to closely monitor their children,” he said.
