TONGAAT Hulett has donated about 20 tonnes of maize to 15 old people’s and children’s homes in Masvingo province to ease food shortages at the institutions.
Director in Minister of State for Provincial Affairs’ office Kudakwashe Machako said the donation was part of the 1,300 tonnes of winter maize the company harvested last year and is distributing to feed people in the province.
“We’ve received more than 19 tonnes from the sugar firm which is going to be distributed among old people and children’s homes in the province. We have homes in all seven districts which are going to benefit and we’re happy as this will go a long way in addressing food shortages at these institutions. We all know that these homes depend on handouts,” said Machako.
Tongaat Hulett planted the winter maize on 329 hectares in May last year and harvested in October. About 200 people drawn from the surrounding communities were employed as casual workers in the winter maize planting project.
The country has resorted to importing maize as a result of a drought that has left as many as four million people hungry countrywide. President Mugabe has said no one will starve.
