SUGAR CANE giant Tongaat Hullet whose workers have been on strike for three weeks now demanding a salary increase, has engaged the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to assist in resolving the labour dispute.
The nearly 16, 000 workers downed tools demanding that their salaries being increased from $170 a month to $350 for the lowest grade.
In a statement the company’s corporate affairs and communications manager Adelaide Chikunguru said the sugar producer had engaged workers representatives; Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Workers Union (ZISMIWU) and Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in their bid to end the strike.
“Tongaat Hullet comprising Hippo Valley and Triangle Estates wish to advise our valued stakeholders that engagement efforts with ZISMIWU are underway. The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare is leading the engagement effort between the two parties. We remain hopeful for a positive and mutually beneficial outcome,” said Chikunguru.
