Tawanda Mangoma in Chiredzi
Lowveld sugar producer Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe has partnered Government to upgrade road signs and carriageway markings as part of efforts to reduce carnage on the accident-prone Ngundu-Chiredzi highway. The 100km-long highway has a high rate of accidents that are usually blamed on poor road signs and markings.
The tie-up between Tongaat and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development is expected to help meet SADC standards on road signs. Tongaat corporate affairs and communications manager Ms Adelaide Chikunguru yesterday said her firm made a commitment early this year to upgrade sign-age on the highway used by the sugar producer to reach its markets in central and northern Zimbabwe.
“Tongaat Hulett prides itself in being the partner of choice to the Government of Zimbabwe and its key stakeholders (as) exemplified by many public, private partnerships undertaken, including the recent completion of the Buffalo Range Airport refurbishment exercise,” she said.
“Currently, the organisation is in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development to improve road markings on the Ngundu to Chiredzi highway and upgrade current road sign-age to SADC standards.”
Ms Chikunguru said her company was prepared to continue partnering Government to improve living standards of communities in the firm’s immediate surroundings.
