At least 528 students from Plumtree town, Mangwe and Bulilima Districts graduated on Friday from 10 different courses held at Dingumuzi Stadium under the Tonganyika Trust.
The institute’s mantra, ‘Skills Development Towards Vision 2030’, is celebrated at the event.
The guest of honour, representing the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality, Honourable Tongai Mnangagwa, was his son, Tongai Jeremy Mnangagwa, who capped the 528 students who successfully completed their courses at the institute.
Government officials from various departments attended the occasion, including officials from the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, and the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
Plumtree ZANU PF members in attendance included Cde Bokani Nleya, Mangwe Chairman for the District Coordinating Committee; Cde Irvine Muzenda, Mangwe District Chairman for Boyz Dza Mudhara; Cde Maxwell Washaya; and Cde Hlalani Mguni, District Coordinating Committee Secretary for Mangwe.
During his address, Cde Mnangagwa states that the institute aligns with the Presidential Vision 2030. “Tonganyika Trust is founded by the couple Tongai Mafidi Mnangagwa and his wife. The trust is empowered to support the President’s vision towards 2030 of ‘leaving no one behind’.” He adds that Tonganyika Trust provides three free driving lessons to provisional licence holders.
“For those who do not manage to enrol with Tonganyika Trust, we are coming back for phase three. No one should be left behind,” says Mnangagwa.
The courses involved a variety of hands-on skills, including welding, hotel and catering, cutting and designing, mortuary attendance, hairdressing, building, solar installation, information and communications technology, and dispensary assistance.
This is the second graduation of Tonganyika Trust in Mangwe District since last year. The first had 81 students, while the second phase saw a rise to 528.
