Tongogara Rural District Council is planning to tar the road connecting Tongogara Growth Point and Chachacha Growth Point after it received $500 000 from the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) for road rehabilitation
Tongogara RDC chief executive Mr Brian Rufasha said the two growth points were the main business centres in rural Shurugwi.
“We received $500 000 from Zinara, which we intend to use to tar the 17-kilometre dust road that links our two main growth points in Shurugwi, namely Tongogara and Chachacha. The road is very busy as it connects schools, mines and the business community in our area,” he said.
Mr Rufasha said the tarring will be done in phases, beginning with three kilometres. He said the tarring of the road will improve the flow of business within the rural community, which was being hampered by the road that is in a dilapidated state
“We are excited as the local authority because when the road becomes efficient, it translates to good business and increase in revenue. The people in this area experience challenges in connecting to the growth points, especially in the rainy season”, he said.
Mr Rufasha said transport operators in the area were taking advantage of the bad state of the road to hike fares. Meanwhile, he said his rural authority is also set to purchase a tipper and a front end loader under its $2 million 2018 budget.
