The majority of the plot holders at Tongwe Irrigation Scheme are women from Dabani village.
The local village head, Mr Josphat Mudau, said the plot holders expected a bumper harvest given the fact that their supply dam had adequate water following the recent rains.
“We are expecting a good harvest because the supply dam has adequate water unlike last year when the dam dried up resulting in the crops wilting,” said Mr Mudau.
The chairperson of the committee running the Tongwe Irrigation Scheme, Mrs Beliya Witness, however said the plot holders were forced to reduce hectarage under crops due to a shortage of draught power.
She said there was need to have at least a tractor as the plot holders were relying on donkeys for draught power.
The scheme measuring 27,5 hectares was established in 1963.
World Vision, a local NGO, assisted by rehabilitating the supply dam and canals as well as repairing the fence.
“We are also facing the problem of monkeys that are destroying our crops and the fence was vandalised by thieves forcing us to provide security,” Mrs Witness said.
