Traditional chiefs tee off in Hwange

The unique tournament which is without doubt the first of its kind in Zimbabwe is sponsored by Chiefs Nekatambe and Chief Pashu.

Around 80 golfers are expected to tee off at noon as they seek to complement the traditional leaders’ efforts to assist the underprivileged people in their respective domains.

Some of the prizes to be won today where traditional values and customs are expected to be dominant include goats, sheep and free range chickens.

Dinner for players and invited guests will be traditional and will be prepared and served by the selected women from Chief Nekatambe area.

Speaking to Chronicle Sport, Chief Nekatambe who is the main sponsor said he was delighted to be associated with the big day.

“Firstly I can say that I have always been moved by the way the Hwange Golf Club has been active in raising funds for people like the Kamandama Disaster widows and their dependants hence I thought maybe we can come up with an initiative to use the sport for the benefit of people in our communities.” he said.

“It’s a very good platform for the chiefs to network with people from various backgrounds so that together we can come up with various ways of assisting the needy people especially the rural folk.

Worthwhile donations are not only in the form of money hence we have encouraged people to donate even old clothes, shoes etc, it will go a long way.” he added.

The Hwange Golf Club captain Victor Suerga paid tribute to the two chiefs for the noble initiative.

“On behalf of the club we are very grateful for the noble initiative was we are all going to tee off for a very worthy cause. Besides it will serve as an eye opener to most people here in towns that our cultural values and norms are alive as there will be an opportunity  to be served traditional meals and also enjoy watching traditional dances.” he said.

“I am well informed that the chiefs want to make the event an annual tournament hence we except a bigger tournament next year,” added Suerga.

Some of the prominent golfers who are expected to tee off today include club chairman Victor Rakabopa, Thankyou Mwampamba, Suerga, Vumbu Ncube, Stephen Simukai, Milton Magidi, Joseph Shoko, Christian Lungu, Patrick Njamba, Champion Sibanda, Kenny Maunga and Stanford Musengi.
