Traditional healer faces rape charge

Court Reporter

A SELF-STYLED traditional healer yesterday appeared in court on allegations of attempting to rape a woman who had approached his shrine in Waterfalls, Harare.

Oliver Chakoroma (36) appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court charged with attempted rape.

He was not asked to plead before magistrate Mrs Barbra Mateko.

The State led by Mr Thomas Chanakira alleges that on November 30 at around 9am, the woman visited Chakoroma’s shrine seeking medical attention for her aching right leg.

Chakoroma asked the woman to return to his shrine the following day with some dirty clothing and a broom, which he said would be used during the cleansing ceremony.

On December 1, the woman returned and Chakoroma sprinkled mealie-meal all over her body.

It is alleged that Chakoroma  asked her to undress for the cleansing ceremony.

She refused and Chakoroma started to wrestle with her.

Chakoroma was overpowered by the woman, but then allegedly started slapping her and hit her with a rope.

The woman told her husband and they went to the police, leading to Chakoroma’s arrest.
