The winners will represent the region at the national contest to be held later this year.
The competition is for class one drivers only.
The contest is in three categories, which are the rigid trucks, articulated trucks and bus competition.
The TSCZ has divided the country into five regions and each region will send nine drivers for the national competition.
The regions are Matabeleland, Midlands, Masvingo, Manicaland and Mashonaland.
TSCZ director of operations research and marketing, Mr Proctor Utete said the competition was for standardising driving especially for those in public transport.
“The Driver of the year competition is for standardising and improving driving and we mainly target drivers of public transport vehicles,” said Mr Utete.
He said the regional winners would battle it out with other winners from the other regions for the national title at a date to be announced.
Mr Utete bemoaned the lack of a category for small vehicles.
“The competition does not end in Bulawayo as the winners will proceed to compete with other regional winners for the national title.
“At the moment we do not have a category for small vehicles but hope to include that in the next edition as it is something still in the pipeline,” he said.
Mr Utete said three drivers from each region would compete in each of the three categories in the national competition, bringing to 45 the number of drivers who will battle for the national title.
An official from TSCZ, Ms Samkeliso Silengane said they would be checking if drivers know how to apply the basic driving rules.
“At the competition, we will be checking whether drivers know the basic driving rules and how to apply them.
“This will help them improve on their driving since the competition targets public transport drivers,” she said.
