The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) on Monday rewarded pupils from all the provinces who excelled during the inaugural 2025 National Schools Road Safety Quiz (NAROSAQ).

The quiz was aimed at empowering the youth with road safety knowledge and making the roads safe for all.

TSCZ’s initiative was meant to enhance awareness and knowledge of road safety among school children.

The body has also been collaborating with various organisations such as the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Vehicle Inspection Department and transport operators for road safety awareness campaigns.

The campaigns involve public awareness efforts and strategic interventions to curb accidents and fatalities. TSCZ also conducts defensive driver training and supervises driving schools.

In his address, Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister Joshua Sacco said, “Today, we come together with a shared purpose: to raise awareness about road safety and to empower our children to become informed and responsible road users.

“The increasing number of road accidents, particularly among schoolchildren, calls for our immediate attention.

“Each incident is not just a statistic; it represents a life changed forever, and it is our responsibility to act.”

He said the TSCZ has done commendable work in organising the competition, which serves not only as a platform for learning but also as a call to action.

“Through this quiz, we are enabling our young minds to understand the critical importance of road safety, a knowledge that they will carry with them for years to come,” said Deputy Minister Sacco.

“We must remember that building a safer nation requires concerted effort from each of us. It is akin to constructing a sturdy building brick by brick.

“Each initiative, each lesson learned and each child educated contributes to the overall safety and well-being of our society.

“By instilling knowledge of road safety in our children, we are laying down the crucial foundations for a culture of responsibility and care.”

Deputy Minister Sacco encouraged the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe to continue collaborating with the Ministry to create programs that further integrate road safety education into schools so that they can ensure that every child has the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the roads with confidence.

Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Senator Charles Tavengwa also said it was their collective responsibility to build the nation, and they begin by fostering a culture of road safety from the grassroots level.

“Every driver, pedestrian, and passenger plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of our roads,” he said.

“By educating our children about safe practices, we are laying the foundation for a safer future.

“Let us empower them to become proactive advocates for road safety, sharing their knowledge with their families and communities.”

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr Torerai Moyo said the event had come at a crucial time, given the troubling increase in road accidents involving schoolchildren across the nation.

“Today, we are reminded of the urgent necessity of road safety, particularly for our young learners,” he said.

“Reports indicate a worrying rise in incidents where schoolchildren are involved in road accidents, both as passengers and pedestrians.

“Alarmingly, recent news articles have highlighted the dangerous practice of overcrowding in “Mushikashika” vehicles, underscoring the immediate need for collective action.”

He encouraged the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe to collaborate with its ministry to implement provisional driving lessons for secondary and high school students throughout the country.

He said the initiative will equip the youths with the necessary knowledge and skills to become responsible drivers and vigilant road users.
