A drinking binge ended fatally in Hatcliffe, Harare on Friday when an imbiber smashed a bottle on the face of a rival, killing him on the spot.
Dennis Magweta (35) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi yesterday charged with murder.
He was remanded in custody to July 19 pending indictment to the High Court. All murder trials are conducted in the High Court.
Prosecutor Mr Zebediah Bofu alleged that on Friday at around 7pm, Magweta and the now deceased were drinking beer at GGM Sports Bar at Hatcliffe Shopping Centre. When the row broke out, Magweta grabbed an empty quart bottle struck the now deceased twice on the face.
He sustained two deep cuts on the face and started bleeding from the cuts before he fell on the ground.
Magweta then kicked his drinking companion several times on the face and then vanished into the darkness.
The court heard that the injured man managed to report the assault to the police at Hatcliffe Police Post Harare.
He was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where he was admitted, but died of his injuries on Saturday.
The following day Magweta was handed over to the police by his relatives after they heard of the accusations that he made the fatal assault.
