AT three-years-old, Lwandile Palu was at a stage in his life where adventure, mischief, and exploring life’s little treasures like kicking a ball or riding a tricycle were all that mattered.
The little boy had started enjoying playing with other children, but like all kids his age, he must have had fears of strange noises, the dark, animals, and imaginary monsters but not death.
He could have grown up to be a medical doctor, a parliamentarian formulating laws that would govern future Zimbabwe, a footballer who would take Zimbabwe to the World Cup, or whatever his heart desired.
All those dreams were abruptly cut short when the little lad lost his life in a tragic accident that also claimed the lives of two people he loved the most — his mom, Forgive Palu (31), and dad, Lorenzo Palu (36).
The road carnage that snatched away the lives of the young Palu family also claimed seven others when an Mzansi Express bus travelling from Bulawayo to Johannesburg was involved in an accident at the Three Mile Circle in Makhado, South Africa, on Tuesday.
The young family was from Bulawayo, but lived in South Africa.
The couple had travelled to Bulawayo to celebrate their fifth anniversary, a milestone that should have been followed by many more years of marital bliss and raising their son together.
The hope for a long and meaningful life together is now a distant dream that will never be fulfilled, and their loved ones are left with heart-breaking unanswered questions and grief that will forever remain etched in their hearts.
Lorenzo was a well-known product and User Experience (UX) designer, while his wife Forgive was a pre-school teacher who had begun to spread her wings in the world of entrepreneurship by establishing a company called Sweet Soul Cakes.
“It’s hard to put into words the pain we’re all feeling. Lorenzo was more than just a talented designer; he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of strength for many. His passing is unimaginable. We can’t express how deeply hurt we are. It’s too much to take in ngoba ngabantwabethu,” said Sifikile Tshuma, Forgive’s mother.
Colleagues and family members remember Lorenzo as a visionary who always sought to uplift others through his work and faith. He was respected not only for his professional achievements but also for his deep commitment to the gospel ministry. Renowned for his innovative designs and creativity, he participated in the virtual UX South Africa hybrid conference in 2022, where he showcased his passion for enhancing user experiences through technology.
The Palu family’s tragedy has left a void that will be hard to fill. Tshuma still ponders over and over again if the decision to travel on Tuesday instead of Monday could have been avoided, as the couple’s travel itinerary was abruptly changed.
Lorenzo’s brother, Amigo Bondiya, said the loss is unfathomable.
“We are at a loss for words to lose such a young family and under such tragic circumstances. This is really hard to accept,” he said.
“Lorenzo believed in the power of community and the importance of lifting each other up. We will honour his memory by continuing to support one another during this incredibly painful time.”
The loss of the Palu family serves as an emotional reminder of the fragility of life and the impact one individual can have on many people — be it family or friends.
In the wake of the tragic bus accident, Mzansi Express released a statement addressing the incident and providing details on the events that unfolded.
“At about 23:50 hours last night (27 August 2024), our bus registration number HT73PGGP travelling from Bulawayo bound for Johannesburg was involved in an accident at the Three Mile Circle (Roundabout) in Makhado, South Africa.
“There were 67 passengers on board as well as the bus crew. Following this accident, some passengers tragically lost their lives and several others suffered various degrees of injuries. South African emergency services attended to the scene and transported the injured and deceased to Makhado and Elim Hospitals for treatment.
“We are currently cooperating with law enforcement agents as they attend to the matter. Next of kin members will be notified when all passengers’ individual identifications have been finalised,” said the bus company.
“We kindly ask for your patience as law enforcement and health service providers work on treating and identifying all passengers, both injured and deceased. The management of Mzansi Express would like to take the opportunity to reassure Zimbabweans that we too are feeling the nation’s shock and pain at this tragic hour.
“A more detailed statement will be released in due course as we continue working with the authorities in Zimbabwe and South Africa.”
