AFTER having been appointed by the United States Tennis Association as one of their Ambassadors, Julius Mashonganyika wants to spread his wings.
He wants to spearhead the development of the sport back home in Zimbabwe. Mashonganyika recently added another feather to his cap when he was named as one of the USTA’s Ambassadors. It is recognition of his sterling job in their development programmes.

Mashonganyika, who is also a USTA Coaching Specialist and a professional coach, is championing a vision to expand educational, enrichment and high-quality tennis development opportunities for young people throughout Mufakose and other high-density communities in Harare. “Everyone who knows me knows that I am a proud native of Mufakose in Harare,” Mashonganyika said.
“I want to see educational, enrichment and tennis programming flourish throughout Mufakose and across Harare’s high-density communities.
“Our young people deserve opportunities to succeed in education, in sport and in life.” Mashonganyika’s vision is rooted in a simple principle: young people should not have to choose between education and athletic excellence. They deserve both.
“Educational and enrichment programmes can help young people develop discipline, leadership, confidence, character and social responsibility.
“At the same time, structured player-development programmes can provide aspiring tennis players with the technical, tactical, physical, mental and competitive preparation necessary to reach higher levels of the sport,” Mashonganyika said.
Mashonganyika often reflects on the influence of one of his role models and mentors, Albert Nhamoyebonde, whose commitment to tennis and youth development in Zimbabwe helped shape his philosophy. For Mashonganyika, producing outstanding tennis players is only part of the mission. The greater objective is developing educated, disciplined, confident and socially responsible young people who can become “life champions” and positively influence their families and communities.
Accessibility is central to that vision.
“Quality tennis development, education and enrichment opportunities should reach children throughout Mufakose and Harare, particularly young people in underserved communities who may have talent and ambition but lack access to coaching, equipment, facilities, competition and other resources.”
Mashonganyika believes meaningful progress can be achieved through collaboration among schools, community organisations, recreation programmes, tennis organisations, coaches, educators, parents, businesses and other stakeholders.
Working together, these groups can create a sustainable pathway that introduces children to tennis, supports their education and personal development, identifies promising players and prepares those athletes to pursue competitive opportunities at increasingly higher levels.
“The ultimate goal is larger than producing tennis champions.
It is about helping prepare young Zimbabweans to become responsible, educated, confident and prosperous citizens,” Mashonganyika said.
