A 41-YEAR-OLD man was severely burnt and subsequently arrested for attempting to vandalise and steal from a Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) transformer near All Souls Mission Hospital, police confirmed.
Gift Mawodza of Kakomwe Village is under police guard while receiving treatment for his injuries at the same hospital. The incident occurred on November 2, 2025.
According to Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (CID), Mawodza was apprehended after police received a tip-off about his condition.
“On November 2, 2025, the suspect, along with his accomplices, approached a ZETDC transformer near All Souls Mission Hospital with the intent to vandalise it and steal armored cables,” Det Insp Muteweri said.
“During the process of harvesting the copper cables, Mawodza was burnt, prompting his accomplices to flee.”
Det Insp Muteweri confirmed that accomplices Simbarashe Tungamirai and Paiben Muparo are now being sought by police. She also warned about the consequences of such crimes.
“The vandalism of public utilities and infrastructure not only undermines our nation’s development and prosperity but also attracts a mandatory sentence of 10 years in prison,” she said.
Mawodza is expected to appear in court today, facing charges for violating Section 60 (a) (2) (b) of the Electricity Act (Chapter 13:19).
