A LOCAL trash artiste — Terrence Musekiwa — has returned from Italy, where he had been on tour, as part of his prize from the Waste no Waste Trash is Treasure competition, held in Harare this year.
Terrence said the tour was very educational to him and opened his eyes to new ideas.
Terrence also said his exhibition at the competition, which he titled ‘‘Miss’’ was inspired by beauty pageants and fashion shows.
He added that it was also inspired by his experiences at dumping sites, where he saw poverty-stricken women searching for valuables to make ends meet.
“I dedicated this piece of work to the women I saw at the dumping sites where I was searching for user friendly objects for art. They too searched for recyclable trash to make ends meet,” he said.
Terrence is the son of the legendary sculptor Kennedy Musekiwa.
Terrence noted that his passion for art emanated from his father.
Italy-based prolific visual artiste Tafadzwa Gwetai spoke highly of Terrence, saying his artwork told a beautiful story out of discarded items.
“When Terrence was in Venice he enjoyed every second of it. As I walked with him in the streets and narrow alleys of Venezia, he looked inspired. As a sculptor, he views the world with a 3D eye and is fascinated with how certain areas are constructed around the canals and how the bronze sculptures in Venice were created,” said Gwetai.
Terrence and Gwetai also visited the Arsenale and the Girding exhibitions in the Venice Biennale.
