Proudly Zimbabwean Foundation hosted a fashion show with a difference over the weekend when models stepped onto the ramp clothed in nothing more than recycled “trash” designed into catchy-looking outfits. Dubbed “The Trashion Show”, the event showcased various elements of clothing made from recycled waste including plastic, paper, sacks,
woollen garments and even old flowers to create stunning outfits for both women and men.
Several local designers were tasked to create attire made from discarded materials and the results blew away the audience at Harare’s International School in Mt Pleasant.
In a speech read on his behalf by EMA Executive Director Aaron Chigona, Environment, Water and Climate Minister Cde Saviour Kasukuwere pointed out that litter is a resource that can create value if converted to other uses intelligently.
“Separated waste will make it easier for industrialists to dispose waste more economically and we as individuals also have to play our part in this initiative,” he said.
Chigona commended the entrepreneurial spirit of the designers and show organisers and encouraged other stakeholders to find ways of making cash out of trash. Music was provided by singer Derrick “Green Ambassador” Mpofu, who sang “Chisikana Changu Zimbabwe’’ and a track dedicated to the war on trash called “Tisarase Marara”.
Eight fashion designers presented their creations and 20-year-old Mufaro Mukoki won the first prize with an eye-catching costume crafted from old newspapers and magazines.
PZF Chairman Dr Joseph Kanyekanye applauded all participators in the event and announced the holding of another Trashion show at the Rainbow Towers in December.
The occasion was graced by EU officials, ambassadors as well as
representatives from event co-organisers Edgars, Culture Fund, KPMG and Swift.
