THE travellers, an energetic afro-fusion band from Gweru, emerged winners of this year’s Chibuku Road to Fame (CRTF) Midlands provincial competition.

The finals, held at the bustling Kwamaiguru Bar in Kwekwe last Saturday, saw the group outclass nine other bands. They walked away $500 richer with On One band from Kwekwe which came second getting $400. On third position was Footprints from the Midlands State University. They were given $300.

The Travellers band member, Tafadzwa Mapaso, said they were overjoyed by the win adding that they were now preparing for the national finals taking place on September 30 in Harare.

“We’re happy to have won especially considering that this was our first time participating in this competition. The journey is always hard, but we always work hard in order to achieve our goals,” Mapaso, who plays the saxophone, said.

He said their group was formed two years ago in Harare and relocated to Gweru where they are being well received.

Matabeleland South finals are on this Saturday in Beitbridge at the Malaxo Beerhall. Ten groups will compete for the ticket to represent their province at the national finals with Bulawayo groups set to battle it out next Saturday at Manor Hotel. From there, Matabeleland North will host its provincial finals in Hwange on September 9 at Jabulani Beerhall with Manicaland concluding the provincial finals with a contest on September 16 at the Neighbourhood Beerhall in Mutare.
