Treasury yet to release Games funds

TREASURY is yet to release funds to the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) for onward transmission to the Zimbabwe National Youth Games’ local organising committee in Matabeleland North province.

This is contrary to reports that the SRC was sitting on close to $1 million from treasury for the Games that kick off in two weeks’ time.

There have been reports that money had been released by the Government and the SRC was holding onto it.

“Why should we do that? It’s not true at all that money has been released, but what we know is that the Ministry (Sport and Recreation) is discussing with Treasury for some funds to be released.

“We don’t know how much and if we had such money, we would quickly release it to make sure things are attended to,” said acting SRC director-general Joseph Muchechetere.

The Youth Games are set to run from August 17-27 and about $2 million is needed to fund the staging of the games.

The government grant together with affiliation fees from the provinces are used to meet costs for running the games.

Affiliation fees have been pegged at $30 per person, down from the initially proposed $150. — @skhumoyo2000
