Tree falls, kills top cop

THE Officer Commanding police in Harare province Senior Assistant Commissioner Shadreck Mubayiwa has died.

He died in a freak accident while driving along Borrowdale Road in Harare on Saturday evening.

Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday said Snr Asst Comm Mubayiwa’s moving vehicle was hit by a Cyprus tree, which fell from the roadside.

“The accident happened along Borrowdale Road, opposite St George’s Road on December 26 at about 6PM. Snr Asst Comm Mubayiwa was driving a Ford Ranger Twin Cab towards the city centre with his wife and granddaughter.

“His car was hit by a falling Cyprus tree on the roof and he sustained internal head injuries. He was referred to Avenues Clinic before being transferred to AMI centre where he later passed on,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.

He did not indicate the conditions of Mubayiwa’s wife and granddaughter.

Chief Supt Nyathi expressed sorrow on the untimely death of Snr Asst Comm Mubayiwa and extended condolences to his family.

Chief Supt Nyathi said funeral arrangements would be announced in due course, adding that mourners are gathered at number 1 Booth Road, Morris Depot in Harare.
