Trey Nyoni milestone excites Zimbos

THE moment Trey Nyoni made his debut for Liverpool did not only mark a significant milestone in both his career and the club’s history, but also served as an inspirational story in Zimbabwe where his parents were born.

Born in the United Kingdom (UK) to Zimbabwean parents, Nyoni has represented England in the junior ranks, but is still eligible to switch his allegiance to Zimbabwe.

Nyoni has, however, not decided on which national team he will play for, when the time comes, between England, where he was born, and Zimbabwe where his father was born and raised.

At just 16 years, eight months and eight days, Nyoni became the youngest player to play in the Emirates FA Cup for Liverpool after making his debut for the Reds on Wednesday night.

For Zimbabwean football enthusiasts, Nyoni’s introduction was a special moment, which has been celebrated as much as it was commended at Anfield.

Former Highlanders player Roy Cele, who is now dedicated to coaching juniors, says Nyoni’s story is an inspiration to youngsters in the country.

“His representing the Liverpool senior team is good for the youngsters in the country. It’s an inspiration for them to see someone making such strides at such a young age. This can only push our boys here to work even harder because they see what they can achieve through Nyoni.

“For me it’s a big inspiration in junior development, it will also show local clubs how to push junior development. We should learn from these big clubs. Right now we know he is a future star in the making,” said Cele.

Football coach Garthly Chipuka said: “He is immensely talented. Hopefully we will be sending in a delegation to him, such that when the time comes he chooses us. Watching him playing also gives us a sense of pride, which we can only hope inspires the young generation in our country.”

Another football coach Evans Netha also weighed in on the matter.

“I think it’s an inspiration at that age to be playing for such a big club. It also teaches our youngsters the importance of discipline and hard work at a young age,” said Netha.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Kloop gave his thoughts on Nyoni in his postmatch interview suggesting that there are areas he can still improve on.

“And I saw  today that the boys make really big steps. With Trey, you can see there’s absolutely no body. I don’t know what his weight is, to be honest, but when he is on the ball, he is very mature. That’s all cool.

“They have to develop a lot, pretty much everything, and they still grow. It’s special. And, of course, it’s strange for me as well, I never had that before that you play with that many kids and still can win football games.

“It’s a really interesting experience, to be honest. Close before the finishing line, I saw that as well, so I’m really thankful for that,” said Kloop.

Nyoni finally made his debut for the Liverpool senior team in the Reds’ 3-0 win over Southampton in an FA Cup match played at Anfield.

The forward got his first minutes when he was introduced in the 77th minute to replace Harvey Elliott. Ironically, the record he beat belonged to Elliott whom he replaced.

Elliott had previously held the record after making an appearance in their 2020 FA Cup win over Everton, when he was 16 years, nine months and one day old.

The 16-year-old Nyoni had been an unused substitute in the last two games, in the Premier League against Luton Town, and against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, respectively.

Nyoni is an attacking midfielder who signed for Liverpool FC from Leicester City in September 2023. He spent 10 years at Leicester’s academy before the Reds swooped in to sign him.

An England Under-16 international, Nyoni scored and assisted on his debut against Italy.

Having been tracked by all of England’s top clubs, it was the Reds who won the race for his signature.

Leicester had no issue in playing Nyoni in the Under-18 Premier League when he was only 15 and he also turned out for the Under-21s in the Premier League International Cup last December.

He played 13 times, scoring twice at Under-18 level for the Foxes in total. Leicester were naturally unhappy about losing one of their crown jewels. -@innocentskizoe
