From Tawanda Mangoma in Triangle
Triangle 1-0 Chapungu
TRIANGLE FC continued with their fine run when they defeated Chapungu at Gibbo Stadium yesterday. It was the home side’s fifth match without defeat after starting the season badly.
It seems Biggie Zuze’s side are slowly finding their feet.
Triangle FC enjoyed a lot of possession in the first stanza spiced by some impressive, accurate passing.
The home side failed to convert a number of goal scoring opportunities with Chapungu goalkeeper Roy Mazingi saving the army side on numerous occasions.
With nine minutes played the hosts almost scored after in-form Tineyi Chitora set up Lameck Nhamo whose powerful shot was punched back into play by Mazingi.
A minute later Chitora again was at it sending an inviting cross from the left flank which found striker Felix Kuswatuka whose connection was also shut out by Mazingi for a corner kick.
The visitors had their first shot on target in the 15th minute when midfielder Maxwell Mavuto beat his marker and powered a 30-metre drive which was saved by Triangle goalkeeper Ronald Mudimu.
A minute later the visitors were awarded a freekick just outside the box and Charles Mativenga’s effort was deflected by Triangle defenders and Talent Mwale’s rebound went over the bar.
Triangle continued to display a spirited performance in search of the game’s first goal but their charge was rendered fruitless by Mazingi who continued to deliver fine saves.
Four minutes before the break, Chapungu’s Tichaona Munyen’enyi was yellow carded by Bikita-based referee Arnold Ncube for a hard tackle on Triangle forward Felix Kuswatuka who was charging towards goal.
In the second half both teams started by weighing each other as they tried not concede an early first half goal.
Triangle had a chance in the 51st minute but striker Richard Kawondera made a mess of Lameck’s cross after failing to connect the ball home with Mazingi badly positioned.
Ncube awarded a freekick just outside the box after Chapungu defender Charles Murisa had hacked down exciting midfieder Tatenda Tsuro.
Warriors player Blessing Chimwamuchere beat Mazingi with a ferocious shot with 62 minutes played to send the home fans into a frenzy.
Triangle survived a late onslaught as the visitors tried to push for an equaliser. Mudimu produced a late save in the 82nd minute.
Zuze said he was happy with his project and was already looking forward to the reverse fixture against Chapungu.
“I would like to give credit to my boys. They played very well despite failing to utilise all chances which came our way especially in the first half. We hope to continue with our fine run and we will address some shortcomings which I noted,” said Zuze.
His counterpart John Nyikadzino blamed match officiating for the defeat.
“It is always difficult to play away especially when you visit Chiredzi and Triangle because of the officiating. Anyway we are now looking forward to the return fixture against them at home,” said Nyikadzino.
