TRIANGLE’S Ghanaian forward Wilson Mensah says growing up in a poor background pushes him to work hard on the field of play.

The 23-year-old has transformed himself into a beast since moving from Bulawayo Chiefs at the start of the current Castle Lager Premiership football season.

The striker has largely been obscure since moving to Zimbabwe with his first stop being CAPS United in 2020.

It is Makepekepe who signed the former Ashanti Gold man three years ago but the Covid-19 pandemic made sure he wouldn’t kick a ball in a Makepekepe shirt.

When football returned with under a bubble during  the Chibuku Super Cup tournament in 2021, Mensah wasn’t registered as a Green Machine player.

But once the Harare giants ditheredx in registering him again last year, the striker took a bold step and joined Bulawayo Chiefs.

He would torment Makepekepe in a 2-0 defeat for the Lloyd Chitembwe charges last year at Luveve as if to remind them how much they had lost by letting him go.

His potential wasn’t at full swing at the Bulawayo club though where Farau Matare, Obrey Chirinda and Mtokhozisi Msebe were the preferred picks for the offensive roles.

However, in a season he is being trusted with providing the goals, Mensah is doing it with aplomb at Triangle.

He was signed by his former Bulawayo Chiefs coach Thulani Sibanda who is now at Triangle.

And the Ghanaian striker has started the season on a high, scoring three goals in six starts.

He has since endeared himself with the Triangle faithful, especially after scoring the equalising goal against FC Platinum at Mandava last Saturday.

Mensah said he is ready to compete for the Golden Boot award this season.

“I am a hardworker. A focused hardworker who is committed to his job. My teammates are also very supportive and a marvel to work with. I was playing in the Ghana Premier League turning out for Ashanti Gold.

“That’s where CAPS United spotted me playing back in 2020.

“Unfortunately, CAPS United never registered me. Of course, in 2020 there was no football due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021 to mid-last year, I was at CAPS United but they had not registered me,” said Mensah.

“So I was not playing for two years. In 2022, I joined Bulawayo Chiefs mid-season. I did not get much game time at Bulawayo Chiefs. I scored three goals though and coach Thulani Sibanda, who was my gaffer at Chiefs, took me to Triangle at the end of last season.

“I come from a poor background, I grew up in the ghetto. I don’t joke when it comes to my work. Football made me who I am and I have to ensure that I take the game seriously.

“I had to buy my first football boots after working so hard under difficult circumstances. So I don’t joke when it comes to football. I push myself to doing well and this season, I want to score as many goals as I can and possibly win the Golden Boot accolade.”

With three goals to his name this season, Mensah is trailing the leading scorers Brighton Makopa of Hwange and Herentals’ Tafadzwa Jim by a single goal.
