TRIATHLON Zimbabwe have indicated they are looking at expanding the Schools Series next season.
Seven junior schools — St John’s Prep, Harare International School, St Michael’s Presentation Primary, Hellenic, Abbeys Preparatory School, Wise Owl and Springvale House — are currently part of the series.
The national association held the third and final race of the three that are staged throughout the season over the weekend with St John’s Prep School being crowned champions again after dominating the 2025-2026 events.
Triathlon Zimbabwe vice-president Pamela Fulton lauded the winners for their efforts and added they want to increase the numbers going forward.
“So yes, being the third season, our numbers are growing. We still have seven schools that are participating. Next year we would like to actually increase the numbers,” said Fulton.
“But really fantastic that the seven schools who have been in all three series are still participating. And yes, St John’s, well done to them.
“They took away the trophy again this year. And they certainly come to our races with a huge number of athletes.
“They have got a really great training regime that goes on at their school, and really making it fun and they are focusing a lot on duathlon.
“So, because they make it so fun, there is a lot of the kids at St John’s that really want to be part of that team.”
Fulton believes this being the third edition, the junior event has laid the foundation for the expansion of the event.
And would want to bring in senior schools in their efforts to increase numbers in the sport.
“We really are so grateful to all these schools for participating and supporting us. I would say that it really is a huge success.
“Our query now is how to keep these kids from junior school and then to take them up into senior school. And keep them still participating in triathlon.
“So next year we really are going to target on having a senior school series. Hopefully this will enable the kids to carry on participating in triathlon and keep growing it amongst all the kids.
“So that we end up with more kids that are trying to qualify for SA Championships and for Africa Championships in the selection races,” said Fulton.
She said they already have a few schools that are keen to be part of the Senior Schools Series.
“And it’s just next season, to try and work out in our busy race schedule when we can cope with having the junior series as well as the senior school series and our selection races.
“But you know what, that’s a fantastic challenge to have. To have loads and loads of people in lots and lots of races” Fulton said.
Triathlon Zimbabwe’s schools commission representative Tanyaradzwa Kasaira said:
“The turnout yesterday was amazing, and it was very good and great support from all schools.”
He appealed to schools to join the event and grow the sport.
