To a noble, fearless, bold and extraordinary woman Auntie Dot,
You simply departed without saying goodbye.
Africa feels empty, powerless, lonely, robbed,
Exposed and vulnerable without you Auntie Dot.
You shared the road we walked together with ease.
You were at ease sharing the bread we broke together
As sisterhood is the ability to accommodate our collective hopes,
Our collective dreams and our collective desires of a better life,
Peaceful co-existence and freedom for all.
Auntie Dot, the freedom fighter
Africa will miss you.
You left when your wisdom was needed the most,
So, as we try to fly with our broken wings and broken hearts,
As we try to swim in this polluted water,
We are aware life will never be the same again,
And again never will Africa be the same without you.
In memory of one who impacted so many in so many ways,
Who touched more lives than most can hope for,
Words ring hollow, as we say our final tearful goodbye to you Auntie Dot
You left a yawning void and your shoes are too big to fill.
You walked your journey with honour and for that we honour you.
You ran a memorable race,
You triumphed, you left your footmark.
Nothing can erase solid footprints made by a committed walker.
Thank you for your strength,
Thank you for the memories,
Thank you for the moments,
Thank you for being you,
Fare thee well our heroine, lala ngokuthula qhawekazi. — Poem by Albert Nyathi
