CONDOLENCE messages are streaming in for the late former Highlanders striker Patrick Mpofu who died on Monday.
Mpofu who had struggled with illness in the last few years breathed his last on the first day of the year. He was 39 years old.
Tributes have been flowing in for the late footballer.
Highlanders expressed great sorrow over the passing of Mpofu.
“We are saddened by the passing on of Patrick ‘Mboma’ Mpofu a former club striker. He passed away today, January 1, 2024 . Mboma joined the Highlanders FC Under-19 squad in 2003, and was later on promoted to the senior team in 2005.
“A former AmaZulu Academy star, Mpofu spent a short time with Bosso’s senior squad and joined Hwange in the middle of the 2006 season before featuring for Bulawayo Chiefs later in his career in 2017.
“He retired from professional football in 2018, having helped Chiefs win promotion to the top-flight,” read a statement from Bosso.
Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (Fuz) also shared their condolence message.
“It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we extend our sincere condolence on the passing away of former Highlanders FC player Patrick “Mboma” Mpofu. Our thoughts and Prayers are with his Family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” read the Fuz statement.
