A HAULAGE truck driver, a passenger, and residents of a Fairbridge Park home escaped with their lives after a truck lost control on Christmas Pass this morning.
The accident occurred around 6am when the truck descended the steep, winding road, struck a Honda Fit near the BP Service Station, dragged another vehicle about 10 meters, uprooted a tree, and rammed into a residential property.
Witnesses told The Manica Post that the crash was caused by a private vehicle cutting off the truck as it exited the service station. The truck driver swerved to avoid a collision but veered off the road into the residential area.
Property owner, Mr Sean Smith said his tenants were fortunate to survive, as they had stepped into the bathroom moments before the truck smashed into the house.
Christmas Pass, a seven-kilometre stretch of mountainous road leading into Mutare’s city centre, has long been notorious for accidents. Despite its scenic terrain, the route has claimed many lives as drivers struggle with its sharp curves.
Authorities have responded to the high accident rate by constructing a 33km bypass designed to divert haulage trucks from the treacherous pass.
