ZIMBABWEAN sprinter Methembe Tshuma says his recovery from the serious femur injury he suffered in Ghana back in May is progressing well, with the promising athlete having started doing light training as he continues his rehabilitation.
Tshuma broke his right femur during his 200m heat at the African Senior Championships at the University of Ghana after losing his footing while reacting to a false-start call.
The injury brought a premature end to what had been an encouraging campaign, with Tshuma having qualified for the semi-finals after clocking the third-fastest time in the preliminary rounds.
Four months on, the youngster is making steady progress and has now taken another important step in his rehabilitation by beginning light training.
Tshuma said the work is being carefully managed as he continues to build his strength and fitness.
“My recovery is going on well. I have started doing some light training and I am slowly getting back on the track. It’s not been easy, but working towards getting back to full fitness,” said Tshuma.
The return to training marks an encouraging stage in his recovery, although he is expected to remain patient as he works his way back to full fitness.
The injury occurred when Tshuma reacted to the false-start buzzer in his 200m heat. He had moved before the gun and, while responding to the call, lost his footing and crashed onto the track, resulting in the femur fracture.
Tshuma’s latest progress will come as welcome news to Zimbabwe’s athletics fraternity.
For now, the focus remains on rehabilitation, gradually increasing his workload and ensuring he makes a safe return to the track.
