Tuku ages like wine

Legend in five-star  performance at Mucheke

THE Godfather of Zimbabwean music, Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, left Masvingo fans spellbound after he gave a mouthwatering display at a well-attended show at Mucheke Stadium on Friday night.

The show, which also featured Sulumani Chimbetu, Peter Moyo and Soul Jah Love as well as Lady Storm, lived up to the fans’ expectations.

However, it was Tuku, like wine which gets better with age, given his flawless performance, who kept fans on their feet as he churned out hit after hit.

Tuku kept fans busy with songs that included Munondipasa manyemwe, Kukwira Gomo, Akoromoka but it was Shamiso which proved the crowd’s favourite.

Fans went into a frenzy when Tuku showed his nimble footedness on the dance floor before being joined by Sulu, who also did the Samanyanga dance with ease.

Lady Storm opened the show at around 10 PM by taking care of the fans with her rhumba beat characterised by spectacular choreography comprising two ladies and three men before man of the moment in the dancehall genre, Soul Jah Love took over.

Soul Jah Love proved popular with the Masvingo fans, mostly youths who could be heard singing along to lyrics of almost all the songs the dreadlocked singer churned out. Supported by a four-member dancing crew, all clad in Rastafarian style green and red dungarees, the controversial dancehall exponent rose to the occasion much to the ecstatic crowd’s expectations.

Just before mid-night, Tuku took to the stage and was welcomed by whistling and ululations from the swelling crowd.

After a five-star performance, the superstar gave way to Dendera Kings front man Sulumani Chimbetu and his ensemble who did not disappoint.

Clad in all black leather, Sulu, as usual kept fans dancing as he played songs from his late father Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu’s album Lullaby together with his own.

Sulu took fans down memory lane when he sang, Spare wheel, one of the great oldies from the late Simon but of note the songs that made the night were; Nyuchi and Phone Yangu from his latest offering, Gunship.

Despite featuring a few new members on guitars and choreography after his reported fallout with some members, the soft spoken singer gave a scintillating performance before the rising Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo signed off the memorable show at around 5 AM.

The Young Igwe, as usual, did not disappoint although some fans could be seen trickling out of the stadium, just after Sulu’s performance. He gave it his all and if his performance is anything to go by, his star seems to be rising by each outing.
