Tuku celebrates 40 years in music

Superstar, Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi is celebrating his 40 years in the music industry with a show at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton on December 5.

The concert dubbed ‘Celebrating Tuku Music’ will see the country’s most renowned and internationally recognised musician celebrating his achievements with those who have supported his music career.

Several artistes who have worked with Tuku over the years including South Africa’s Ringo Madlingozi Jah Prayzah, Sulumani Chimbetu, Munya Mataruse, Diva Mafunga, Donald Kanyuchi, Sebastian Magacha and Chiedza Chevatendi are billed to perform.

Tuku’s establishment, Pakare Paye Arts Centre which has a restaurant and accommodation facilities is one of his achievements which he set up to train up-and-coming musicians.

“Pakare Paye Arts Centre is one of the places that has groomed several arts personalities and that’s one achievement the superstar wants to celebrate,” one of the organisers of the celebrations, Taka Mashonganyika said.

The celebrations where one will be expected to part with $10 are expected to attract hoardes of fans.

With his husky voice, the legend who has been in the music industry since 1975 has become the most recognised voice to emerge from Zimbabwe and onto the international scene. He has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond.

With 63 albums to his name, latest being Mukombe Wemvura (2014), Tuku has toured many countries, earning endorsements from several companies as their brand ambassador. The star recently collaborated with youths, DJ Stavo and South Africa’s Busiswa.

He has also acted in various films including Jit (1990), Neria (1993), Jit, Shanda (2004), Sarawoga (2009) and Nzou NeMhuru Mudanga (2012) the live recording of a show, a theatrical performance which Tuku had with his son, Sam just weeks before his death.

He has bagged over 30 awards among them Kora, Nama and Zima.

Apart from his music, Tuku is also recognised as an entrepreneur who recently built a fashion label – Hai Kobo which specializes in clothing. – Harare Bureau/Showbiz Reporter.
