Although superstar Oliver Mtukudzi and Afro-jazz virtuoso Victor Kunonga are close in their private lives, they have not worked together on stage for sometime.
Not that there is any blood between them, but they have been too busy with their respective schedules and itineraries to make time for a combined show.
Tuku and Kunonga are accomplished acoustic guitarists and lyricists although Tuku is miles ahead in the art.
It is clear that Kunonga was inspired by Tuku – who is one of his biggest mentors – but he has evolved into a veritable music master himself.
Tonight, the two musicians meet in a “re-union” gig to be held at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale, Harare.
Fans of the two artistes are without doubt in treat for a roller-coaster musical ride of Tuku’s powerful Katekwe rhythms and Kunonga’s infectious Afro-jazz ballads.
It will be a moment to cherish when both the artistes take to the stage to do one or more duets and those who have seen the duo in action together on stage, know the kind of magic that they can work out.
Both have a string of hit songs like Tuku’s “Tozeza Baba”, “Neria”, “Mutserendende”, “Nhava Izere Mhepo” and “Dzoka Uyamwe”; and Kunonga’s “Maidarirei?”, “Mamurega” and “Hatinete”. It is pretty obvious that these gems will be further spiced with more finesse when they collaborate on stage.
“We are excited to see the two legends coming to play after a long time. We are glad that Mdara Tuku and Kunonga still enjoy cordial relations despite the long time that they have not shared the stage,” said Walter Wanyanya of Ngoma Nehosho, who are promoting the show.
