Turning resolutions into reality

Gabriel Manyeruke

AS people are still excited about 2025, this is the time for reflection and setting goals. For many of us, this means jotting down New Year’s resolutions, with hopes of making 2025 our best year so far.

While this annual tradition is marked by a lot of promise, it can also stir moments of introspection and, at times, regret.

Let me share a story that captures the seriousness of making resolutions and the lessons we can draw from it.

A day in the park

I ardently enjoy outdoor life, appreciating geography and marveling at nature. I often spend time in the local park alone.

One day, as I was basking in the serene ambiance of the park, I noticed a smartly dressed teenager seated alone on a swing, looking visibly downcast.

He was not partaking in the games and laughter around him.

This lad, who seemed to be aged 16, sat with his head bowed, staring meditatively at the ground.

Driven by curiosity, I approached him and initiated a conversation.

“Hey there, you look a bit troubled. What’s weighing on your mind?” I inquired gently.

He sighed and confided: “I’m anxious about the year 2025. I had set so many resolutions at the start of 2024, but I failed to achieve most of them. Now, I’m uncertain if I should set new ones or if I’ll just fall short again.”

Listening to his concerns, I could not help but reflect on my own experiences growing up with New Year resolutions.

As a kid, I eagerly wrote down ambitious goals each year — from excelling in academics, mastering new sports to immersing myself in cultural pursuits at school. But, like the teenager in the park, many of my resolutions remained unfulfilled by the year’s end.

Reflecting on our resolutions

However, these experiences have imparted valuable lessons that I wish to share with you, dear readers, as you set your resolutions for 2025.

Be they academics, sports or cultural endeavours, transforming resolutions into reality demands determination, planning and a touch of humour.

Setting SMART goals

One pivotal lesson is to set SMART goals — ones that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Instead of making a vague resolution like “do better in school”, strive for something precise like “boost my Maths grade by 10 percent by the end of the term”. This clarity simplifies tracking progress and sustains motivation.

Balancing academics, sports and culture

Striking a balance involving different life spheres is paramount. Excelling in academics does not mean you have to neglect sports or cultural activities.

Engaging in diverse interests can enrich your learning experience and contribute to overall development.

For instance, participating in a school sports team can teach you teamwork and discipline, while joining a club can boost your confidence and creativity.

By pursuing a well-rounded approach, you not only achieve your resolutions but also develop a versatile skill set.

Embracing flexibility and resilience

Life is unpredictable and sometimes, despite our best efforts, things do not go as planned. It is important to be flexible and resilient.

If you face setbacks, do not be discouraged. Adjust your approach and keep moving forward. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.

Creating a support system

Having a support system can make a significant difference. Share your resolutions with friends, family or mentors who can encourage and hold you accountable. Celebrate your achievements together and seek advice when you encounter obstacles.

Celebrating small wins

Do not wait until you have achieved your final goal to celebrate. Acknowledge and reward yourself for the small milestones you achieve along the way. This keeps you motivated and reminds you of the progress you are making.

Conclusion

As we step into 2025, let us remember the lessons from the teenager in the
park and our own experiences with resolutions.

Set realistic and meaningful goals, stay flexible and seek support from those around you.

Embrace the journey with determination and a positive attitude.

May your New Year resolutions inspire you to reach new heights in academics, sports and culture.

Here is to a year of growth, learning and plenty of joy. Happy New Year and may your dreams come true!
