adminIn an interview at Queens Sports Ground during Tuskers’ first training ahead of the start of the second half, Ewing said the players were geared up for the challenge.
Tuskers lead the Castle Logan Cup with 21 points from five matches with Mashonaland Eagles of Harare being their closest challengers for the country’s most coveted silverware.
Eagles have 20 points from the same number of games and if they win their league match against Manicaland Mountaineers which is underway in Harare, they will top the table.
Tuskers are on a bye and will play their first match of the second half on 21 January against Southern Rocks in Masvingo.
“The guys are all geared up for the second half of the season. It is going to be hectic but we are determined to defend the Logan Cup. As it is we are on top of the log and we will very much want to stay there until the season ends.
“We are technically out of the One Day game but we are going to give a fight so that maybe we get into the final but that will be hard. For our One Day game we were let down by focusing on winning the Castle Logan Cup because that is the biggest trophy on the land which everyone wants to win.
“I think what we can do as a club in terms of the One Day game is to start working for next season and build a strong foundation for the shorter version of the game,” said Ewing.
Tuskers have one of the strongest squads in the domestic league and Ewing believes having so many all-rounders in the team has contributed to their success.
Some of the bowlers that have been in form for Tuskers include Njabulo Ncube who has since been called for national team, injured Christopher Mpofu, John Nyumbu and Glen Querl, among others.
Ewing has been among the impressive batsmen who form a strong attack.
Coach Dave Houghton has Keegan Meth, Keith Dabengwa, Steven Trenchard, Adam Wheater, Paul Horton and Craig Ervine for his title ambitions.
“We have a united team as everyone comes from Bulawayo and they understand that everything is about the team. We have a good batting line-up and most of the players have played for the national team. Our bowlers are also good. If you look at our team all-round we have a strong squad and that is why you find that even if others are called for the national team or they are injured the guys who replace them fit in well,” said Ewing.
